IRISS | Self-Registration Overview
The Institutional Research Information Services Solution (IRISS) is an online system that gives researchers and their teams an automated workflow when applying for ethics certifications necessary to conduct research with humans or their information.
If you already have an IRISS account, please email iriss.support@ucalgary.ca to have your account configured for access to HREBA committees. If you have no affiliation with the University of Calgary, please proceed with a registration request for a first time user.
Important Information
If you are already registered with one of the HREBA committees and need access to another committee, please contact us at info@hreba.ca. Submitting another registration will not give you access to the additional committee.
Information collected is subject to disclosure under of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act; any Personal information is collected specifically pursuant to Section 33(c). This collection is in relation directly to the Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta (HREBA). Registration
HREBA Cancer Committee (HREBA-CC)
The Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta – Cancer Committee (HREBA-CC) provides ethical review and oversight for all cancer and cancer-related research involving humans (adult and pediatric), their information and/or samples. This includes both research that involves or does not involve health information as defined by the Alberta Health Information Act (HIA).
HREBA Clinical Trials Committee (HREBA-CTC)
The Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta – Clinical Trials Committee (HREBA-CTC) provides ethical review and oversight of clinical trials involving humans (adult and pediatric), their information and/or samples, with the exception of cancer research, conducted by community-based/private practice physicians or other qualified healthcare professionals. This includes both research that involves or does not involve health information as defined by the Alberta Health Information Act (HIA).
Please Note: Minimal Risk studies such as Phase 4 Observational Post-Marketing studies or Chart Reviews should be submitted to HREBA – Community Health Community (HREBA-CHC). If you are unsure where to apply please contact info@hreba.ca.
HREBA Community Health Committee (HREBA-CHC)
The Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta – Community Health Committee (HREBA-CHC) provides ethical review and oversight of research involving humans, their information and/or samples, with the exception of cancer research and clinical trials, conducted by community-based investigators and/or organizations (both for and not-for profit). This includes both research that involves or does not involve health information as defined by the Alberta Health Information Act (HIA).
The committee also provides ethical review for non-research projects (e.g. quality improvement, program evaluation) that are of higher risk, involve vulnerable populations, or areas of sensitivity.
For individuals from Alberta Health Services or Covenant Health who have the authorization to view access files within the system.
