Funding Definitions

Grant (external): Funding from non-industry awards, foundation grants, peer-reviewed grants

• Examples: CIHR, NIH, Alberta Cancer Foundation

Contract: Funding provided through industry grants, awards, and gifts or similar

• Examples: Industry Funded or For-Profit Funding

Internal Funds: Funding from investigator contingency accounts and all faculty and/or departmental funds

Service Agreement: Funding to pay for specific services

• Examples: Animal Testing

Cooperative Groups: Funding from a large network of researchers, physicians and health care professionals at public and private institutions who are members of the group in involved in clinical research

• Examples: Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG formerly NCIC-CTG), Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), Children’s Oncology Group (COG), International Cancer Research Group (ICRG), VIGOUR

Donation: Funding from a donor who expects nothing of significant value in return

• Examples: crowd sourcing, charitable donation
